The Perfect Dress

by Mary Jane Cole

When her parents are killed by a drunk driver, six-year old Mary Leigh Worth inherits her reliable, but unprepared aunt and uncle. They provide their niece with a safe home while she experiments with her place in the world. Her aunt and uncle foster her interest in sewing. Obtaining an Associates degree in the Design School of Chicago, Worth wants to bank her only marketable talent. She leaves her family in Chicago to pursue her dream of fashion design.

Her boyfriend, Michael, turns out to be only as good as a trip companion to San Francisco. She leaves his cheating ways and finds a pair of cross-dressing roommates. Worth fuels her fashion dream with odd jobs, determination, and pursuit of a man. Her independence makes her lonely, as she hardly sees the top rung on her career ladder. A chance encounter with a handsome stranger lands Worth head-over-designer heels-in love. Halib Mohammed is a foreigner in his thirties, and Worth's attraction is immediate. Their love affair consumes her. When Mohammed's pilot's job takes him away for days, Worth can hardly breathe until his return. She is unsure how to make him want her as much as she desires him. Her destructive behavior soon nips at their relationship, as well as her status quo job. Worth strives for monetary gain and a love that will not disappoint her. Will she ever realize her dreams of love in the sketches of bridal gowns? Will Mohammed's love be strong enough to rescue her from new lovers?

In The Perfect Dress, author Mary Jane Cole presents a unique, contemporary story, filled with love, grief, and mystery. The storyline and twists are interesting and unexpected. I would have enjoyed this book more if the author had fleshed out the characters. Contradictory information could make the reader feel less attachment to the characters. Great descriptions of settings and seamstress designs are peppered into the jarring plot. It is enjoyable to see popular songs streaming the story's events. The twists to finding love may keep readers interested in The Perfect Dress.
