The Why Cafe

by John P. Strelecky

On rare occasions, a self-help book hits the reader square in the face. Such was the case with me in reading The Why Café.

Right from the beginning I had an idea where the author was going, but I admit I expected a more religious tone. The fictional story of the café and the questions that the people of the café ask were intriguing enough, but the reader becomes engrossed as he ponders his own PFE (purpose for existing).

Much is made of the fact that we spend an inordinate amount of time and effort to buy things we don't really want or need. The answer to this situation is to do what you enjoy. Many of us retire in order to do the things we like and in the process leave the very things that make us happy.

The story of John and his search for his PFE is simple enough, but under those questions that his friends ask lies a challenge for each reader to find what he likes to do. If the reader does this (and it doesn't happen overnight but is a long process sometimes), he will find his PFE.

The book needs to be on your bookshelf to visit frequently when you get off track from what you really want to do.

Had I read this book before I retired, I'm not sure I would have taken that step.
