There is an old hunter's legend that says when a herd of elephants is culled none must escape for if it does it will become The Storyteller and spread the word of man's wickedness to others of its species.  This sounds like a piece of superstition but here is the tale of one elephants that did escape the cull that killed the rest of her herd.  Taken from her home in South Africa baby elephant Amy traveled to America where she ended up in the capable hands of Bob Norris, television's "Marlboro Man" and a real cowboy on his own Colorado ranch.

There is a lot about elephants in this heart-warming and fascinating true story but it is woven seamlessly into the tale so that the end product is no wildlife textbook.  It is also the story of the cowboy's role as steward of the animals in his care whatever they are and Bob's deep love of creatures from an early age when he had a pet bear.  Amy becomes part of his family but not as any performing animal and it isn't giving away anything to say that this is a story that can only end one way - with Amy's return to Africa.

Compelling, informative, often amusing but never - perish the thought - cute, this delightfully illustrated book shows that if Amy is the Storyteller of legend her tale will at least show the other elephants that people aren't all bad.  Highly recommended.
