The
Universe, The Gods, and Men Ancient Greek Myths Told by Jean-Pierre Vernant Translated from the French by Linda Asher HarperCollins - 2001 ISBN: 0060197757 - Hardcopy Nonfiction / Myths Reviewed by Carisa Weeaks,
MyShelf.Com Greek Mythology has been the subject of children's movies (Disney's Hercules), TV Shows (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Young Hercules), books, poems, essays, and many other forms of entertainment and learning. This is one of the few books, though, that not only tells the myths and explains them, but does so in the order of how they supposedly went, beginning with "the Void" and ending with "Andromeda's Beauty." There is a glossary of terms, names, and explanations on who and/or what each god, goddess, monster, and hero was. This is an amazing book. Linda Asher, a former editor at the New York Times, translated it from French. Jean-Pierre Vernant, the original author, has done an incredible job putting together all of this information, and I for one, will never let this book out of my sight. It is a must have for any mythology junkie like me! |
