African
Americans at Home
By Michael
Henry Adams
Mick Hales (Photographer)
From
hallways to bedrooms to kitchen and bathrooms, this book covers
the homes and the contents of noted African Americans.
In
the intro, the author mentions the debut of The Cosby Show and that
many did not believe blacks lived like the Huxtables. The author
felt the show did a lot to change America's perception on how blacks
lived, and that at the time "many African Americans, starved
for affirming representations of black décor, rejoiced."
Adams's desire to show what the most notable black homes do look
like, shows readers of all colors and cultures some beautiful places
to ooh and ahh at.
Michael
Henry Adams' segment, "The Author at Home" is the one
that impressed me the most. A man with rooms full of books and objects
talks about growing up and shares his lovely urban outdoor retreat.
Some others in the book are: Alma and Charles Rangel, Sylvia Waters,
Nancy Lane, Lana Turner, Joy and Kesha Crichlow.
Style
and Grace is the first of its kind. Considering the fascinating,
beautiful contents, lets hope it's not the last.
