A Day in the Life of the American Woman
How We See Ourselves

by Sharon J. Wohlmuth, Carol Saline, Dawn Sheggeby

A Day in the Life of the American Woman: How We See Ourselves is a bold undertaking. Sharon J. Wohlmuth, Carol Saline, and Dawn Sheggeby sent out fifty women photographers on April 8, 2005 to shoot fifty or more women in their home or work environments. Many of these subjects have made outstanding contributions to their communities. Others have excelled in their given crafts and professions. Still others were just doing what they do every day. All of them are extraordinary. There are middle-aged women surfers and skateboarders, day-care workers and bluegrass stars, doctors and legislators, dancers and actors, police officers and community activists, caterers and do-it-yourselfers, and much, much more. All are inspiring.

Each photo grouping is accompanied by an essay written by Carol Saline about the woman, what she does, and often how she feels about herself and the world around her. Their stories are arresting, and their photographs are priceless. Sharon J. Wohlmuth, a photojournalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, helped gather the professional photographers, who all come with sterling credentials; eleven of them have won the Pulitzer Prize. Dawn Sheggeby, who oversaw several up-scale photography projects, pulled the photos and the essays together.

A Day in the Life of the American Woman: How We See Ourselves is a stunning book. Within its pages, women can see what they do as being valued. Women are held to a litmus test that only other women can know and fully appreciate. On good days and especially on bad ones, we women can page through A Day in the Life of the American Woman: How We See Ourselves and get in touch with who we really are and what we can hope to become.
