Kimberly and James Derk already had children of their own, a boy and a girl from previous marriages. Although
they wanted a larger family, they were unable to have more children of their own. When James and Kim learned of
four sibling children living in an orphanage in Hungary, they decided to make these children a part of their family.
Hungarian Rhapsody is the story of their adoption process: a journey told from James’ perspective. James
is a journalist by profession. While he touches briefly on the legal requirements of adoption, unlike most books
on this subject, he concentrates most of his attention on the personal journey he and Kim undertook to make these
needy children a part of their family.
James shares the joyful emotions he feels when he and Kim finally meet their children, and provides an honest
and often heartrending description of the orphanage environment, filled with so many children who long only for a
little attention and love. The experiences James and Kim share while dealing with four small children who speak a
different language are not too difficult, thanks to a translator, but they are often hilarious, especially with
the youngest twins. It doesn't take long before Kim and James discover the differences - and similarities - in
the children’s personalities and individual needs.
Kim and James quickly realize the long trek to Hungary was worth every second, especially when they and the
four children return to their Indiana home. But their journey hasn't ended yet. When James and Kim learn that
their siblings have a younger brother, then a baby sister, this unique and loving couple make two additional trips
to the same orphanage to make their family complete.
Hungarian Rhapsody: An Adoption Story is a wonderful, honest and downright enjoyable story. James is an
excellent writer and has a great sense of humor, which often had me laughing out loud. The book also contains
helpful hints regarding the adoption process. Hungarian Rhapsody: An Adoption Story is a heartwarming
story of hope, courage, and the overwhelming power of love. I highly recommend it to all parents, and especially
those who have adopted or plan to adopt.
