Jesus is No Excuse
The Words and Verses of Gregory St. James
by Gregory St. James
In his book, Jesus Is No Excuse, Gregory St. James presents an almost puritanical conception of God’s
relationship with man, asserting that following the Ten Commandments is the surest way to achieve salvation and
an entry into heaven. The title comes to the heart of the book - Jesus is no excuse for our sinful ways and
Jesus doesn’t love us if we sin.
The eleven chapters are written in such a manner that they appear to be transcriptions of actual sermons.
Lapses in Standard English are prevalent, as would be expected in a literal transcription. Some readers frown on
this form, but this form gives an immediacy to the author’s message as the reader envisions James preaching
these views to the congregation.
It is likely that many Christians will be defensive about many of his ideas, but the two that should cause
the biggest outcry are his views on homosexuality and the role that Jesus played in the plan for salvation.
After much dialogue over the years about how great a sin homosexuality is, James offers a more lenient view on
the subject and the reader is advised to check his views out.
James’ views on the role that Jesus played in the salvation of man seem to refute much of the New Testament.
While not denying the existence of Jesus, he gives him a much lesser role in the drama. This was an interesting
read. |
