The Parent Care Conversation
6 Strategies for dealing with the emothional and financial challenges of aging parents
by Dan Taylor
The Parent Care Conversation is a must-read for any adult child with aging parents. Written in a relaxed,
friendly style, one feels as if author Dan Taylor is there chatting with you. Taylor includes all the information
necessary to help parents make informed decisions about their future care needs.
Presented as a set of six conversations adult children should have with their parents, his book gently guides
the reader through ways to approach the delicate subjects of long term care, securing financial resources, and
preparing for the final stages of life. Each of the six conversations takes an entire chapter and suggests ways
to initiate the discussions, offers examples of successful conversations, dispels various myths (such as, "I can
wait until I'm older to plan") and offers advice in dealing with reluctant participants. Chapters include: talking
about money; property; professional care; living arrangements ranging from independent living to residential care
facilities and in-home helpers; and legacy concerns. Resources are listed as well, including websites with
additional information about all aspects of this process.
As an adult child with two aging parents myself, I found this book filled with practical information that I
will be able to use in many future discussions as my parents and I plan together for their comfort and peace of mind. |
