The Peebles Principles
Tales and Tactics from an Entrepreneur's Life of Winning Deals, Succeeding in Business, and Creating a Fortune
from Scratch.
by R. Donahue Peebles with J.P. Faber
Mr. Donahue Peebles’ new book The Peebles Principles is a must read for anyone looking to learn the ins and
outs of becoming a successful entrepreneur. Based on real-life anecdotes from his rags to riches business life,
there is something for everyone to learn, from summer intern to CEO. Based in Washington, DC, Mr. Peebles
specializes in commercial real estate development. However, his world reaches far outside the beltway; he has
completed projects in San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Miami Beach, where he is the Chairman of the Greater Miami
Convention and Visitors Bureau. There is no doubt about this business person; he is driven and doesn't linger on
setbacks, as they are opportunities in disguise.
I especially enjoyed Chapter Five: The Royal Palm, Never Say Die. The author explores a complicated set of
business parameters, the meandering flow of the transaction, and the value of pitching your story to the media,
when it is on the up and up. Overcoming some impressive competitors for the right to re-develop the Royal Palm
Hotel, Peebles’ attention to detail and not relaxing in the eleventh hour, won him the deal. Key Peebles’
Principles are: Make your money going into the deal. Control of the deal is more important than cash. Being lucky
means being ready. If the key doesn't fit, change the lock. Be a bulldog on details. Listen to your first instinct.
Respond quickly to attacks. Find out what the other side really wants and give it to them. Turn vinegar into wine;
setbacks are opportunities in disguise. Seeing value is everything. Be the last man standing.
If you're looking for a no-nonsense, low-hype alternative to Donald Trump, pick up a copy of this excellent case
study of American business. |
