Reefs Revealed
by Alex Mustard
If your coffee table could talk, it would ask for a book like this to be placed upon it. This book surely has
all the attributes to make it coffee table book of the year: satisfyingly large format, attractive cover,
gorgeous photography and some thought-provoking information to spark conversation amongst your guests.
Here is a paean of praise to the coral reef in all its glory - beautiful, diverse, deadly and endangered.
There is not a lot of text, but it is well worth reading as it contains so much information about reefs and why
they are special. Mainly, the author lets the photographs speak for themselves, for surely no amount of verbiage
can put across the message that here is something worth saving for more reasons than the merely practical. Moray
eels spar over a mate and form a heart shape, creatures form symbiotic relationships, queue up at cleaning
stations, produce offspring and hunt and all in the most glorious Technicolor captured with the author’s camera.
It’s up to date too, as here are photographs of a new shark discovered only in 2006 and there is plenty of data
about new discoveries, statistics and facts about reef history, destruction and fortunately in some cases
recovery. I can’t stop looking at it - see if it has the same effect on you! |
