Zombiemania
90 Movies To Die For

by Dr Arnold T Blumberg & Andrew Hershberger

Zombies are a horror subgenre in their own right, and people have been making films about the living dead since White Zombie in 1932. There can be few people who haven’t sat mesmerized as ghastly ghouls from the grave menace living folk for their entertainment, and so here is a book all about it. As is usual with Telos, this guide is formidably well researched and thorough, with each film succinctly but meticulously described in some considerable detail. I for one had no idea that so many films existed, so this is one to read with a pen and paper handy for that trip to the DVD hire shop. There are notes about the actors, quotes, the bits that don’t add up ("Now Wait A Minute!"), and even what countries banned the film (and most of them seem to have been banned somewhere). Find out about the "necrology" (ie the way in which the zombie idea is used and where the ideas came from) in each film, and the all-important analysis of whether the film was any good. In short, pretty much everything you are likely to want to ask about the films. At the back is a handy film index, with dates of cinema release, and when (or if) they were released on video or DVD, so you can get that pen and paper out again. Once again, this doesn’t look like a traditional coffee table book at first glance (small format, black and white stills and lots of print), but don’t forget that many of these films weren’t in color!
