PURPLE CANE ROAD is the most recent Dave Robicheaux novel the last one was SUNSET LIMITED in 1998.

Homicide investigator Dave Robicheaux is back again and this time it is personal, because it involves his mom and her murderers.

Dave and his partner Clete Purcel are looking for Zipper Clum, a pimp that has information that will spare the life of a death-row inmate, Letty Labiche. When found Zipper asks Dave if his mama's name was Mae Gullory.  He then proceeds to tell Dave that his mama was drowned, murdered by a couple of crooked cops because she knew too much.  But, of course, Zipper is killed after he tells Dave his story.  PURPLE CANE ROAD is a novel where sub-plots fit conveniently into the main story, and they all come together at a climactic ending that left me tearing up for Dave.

PURPLE CANE ROAD has many colorful and exhilarating characters.   Mr. Burke describes the sights, sounds and smells of New Iberia, Louisiana and you feel it all.  But when the author described the heat I actually felt the sweat on the back of my neck.  I will simply say that this book is remarkably written and well worth the read.
