Salome Waterhouse, a feng shui practitioner, inherits her grandfather's Perfume Mansion, but refused to live in it, feeling it had "bad vibes". Instead she rents the mansion to artist, Palmer Fordham.

Hired to do a feng shui consultation for Fordham's birthday, she arrives at Perfume Mansion to find him murdered. She notifies her cousin, Phyllis, head of the detection department. Both of them separately probe into Fordham's life and loves to discover the murderer. In the course of her investigations Salome discovers secrets and scandals in her own family's past.

This is a fast read, with a group of oddball characters. The story veers rapidly from the past to the present. There is much information throughout for anyone interested in, and for anyone who has no knowledge of it, the practice of feng shui.
