Death
of a Poison Pen
A Hamish
Macbeth Mystery
By M C Beaton
Death
of a Poison Pen finds Highland Police officer Hamish Macbeth
and local reporter, Elspeth Grant, investigating a series of poison
pen letters in the neighboring village of Braikie. Soon the Braikie
postmistress is found hanged. Shortly afterwards, the former headmistress
is murdered. Then a third death occurs in Braikie.
Elspeth,
who has more than a passing interest in Hamish, looks for an opportunity
to take their relationship to a new level. However, she'd have to
first get pass the visiting Jenny Ogilvie who is also hoping to
catch Hamish's eye. However, Hamish's ex-fiancée, Priscilla
Halburton-Smthe hovers in the back of Hamish's life and heart. Is
he finally ready to commit to another relationship with either Jenny
or Elspeth? Alternatively, will the women's' efforts to aid Hamish
make one or both of them a target for the murderer?
Whenever
I read a Macbeth mystery, I expect several things: to be entertained,
to laugh, and to find putting the book aside before the end a difficult
undertaking. Death of a Poison Pen did not disappoint in those respects.
It is always a pleasure to "return" to Lochdubh for a
visit. Hamish and the assortment of villagers that populate each
Macbeth mystery are always a delight. As usual, Beaton manages to
pen a satisfying mystery, nicely interwoven with a rich taste of
life in a small, Scottish village.
Although
this series continues to delight and enthrall, the time has come
to finally settle the relationship or lack thereof between Hamish
and Priscilla. The constant visiting and hints at renewing the relationship
between the two has become an unwelcome distraction. However, Death
of a Poison Pen ended on a somewhat sad note. Alternatively,
maybe the ending will mark a new beginning for Hamish Macbeth. I
eagerly await the next book in the series to discover what the future
holds for Hamish.
