By Elizabeth Peters
Read by Barbara Rosenblat
Amelia
Peabody-Emerson and her family are stumped. After being run out
and banned from ever studying in the Valley of the Kings again,
they have no idea what they are going to do for the season when
they head back to Egypt. Trying to figure it out, they spend their
summer at home in Kent, wandering the estate and trying to fill
their days with thoughts of something other than of being back in
the place they truly know in their hearts is their home –
Egypt. Her son, Ramses, wants to head off to Germany to study, but
their budding plans get nipped when a strange visitor from the Lost
Oasis shows up.
When
he tells them that he is the younger brother of their old friend
Tarek and that he was sent to take them back to the Lost Oasis as
quickly as possible to help the people figure out how to cure the
sickness that is slowly taking King Tarek, they immediately set
about making plans to get to the isolated desert oasis without bringing
any unwanted visitors along. Peabody, Emerson, Ramses, and Nefret
however, could have never guessed what they were really being led
into.
As
they struggle to save their lives and the lives of their friends,
Peabody and Emerson shine brightly as always. This plotline is set
in a diary that was lost up until recently, and compiled with excerpts
from a manuscript written by Ramses about his adventures with his
family. I love this concept! It gives avid Amelia Peabody fans the
chance to go back into a period of time that was missing from the
series and relive the excitement of the lost adventures. The relationships
between the Peabody, Emerson, Ramses, Nefret, and their Egyptian
friends each stand out on their own, making the characters even
more deep and incredible. It’s an adventurous read that will
pull anyone into the land of tombs, mummies, murder, and mayhem!
