Humble Pie
A Pippa Hunnechurch Mystery
By Ron and Janet Benrey

Pippa Hunnechurch, a “head hunter” who runs her own executive recruiting company in Ryde, MD, is hit with a lawsuit. Hardesty Software Corporation claims that she committed “consultant malpractice” by luring Dennis Grant, a speech writer for Hardesty, away from his job – and into the arms of another company looking for an employee with Grant’s abilities. As Pippa, her husband James, two of their friends, and Pippa’s loyal secretary try to sort out the mess, Pippa receives a call from the subject of the lawsuit.

Without her husband’s knowledge, Pippa arranges to meet Grant. He asks her to bring copies of speeches he sent to her when he first approached her about finding him a new job. Pippa wants to know why he lied about it – and why he has allowed the lawsuit to go forward, knowing that the allegations are false. But only minutes after she meets with Grant, he is struck by a black truck and left for dead. Although he lingers for a while, eventually he dies. Even though Grant is gone, Hardesty continues to pursue its action against Pippa. She decides to investigate Hardesty and their employees in an attempt to find the truth and exonerate herself.

Unfortunately, the situation causes problems in her new marriage as she and James try to find common ground and trust in the middle of a trying situation. They learn that “pride surely does go before destruction.” Who is lying and who is telling the truth? How deep do the lies go? Will Pippa find the truth in time, and will her marriage survive?

Ron and Janet Benrey have created an engaging character in Pippa Hunnechurch. Her British ways are charming and her humanity compelling. She is the kind of character that readers will connect to – and follow faithfully. Humble Pie is a page turning mystery with depth and spirit. I absolutely loved it. The only problem? Now I have to go back and read the other Hunnechurch novels!
