The Narrows
Harry Bosch #10
By Michael Connelly

Read by Len Cariou

“When it rains, don’t go near the Narrows.”

In California, L.A. Detective Harry Bosch is retired and now working as a P.I. The widow of an old friend visits him about the death of her husband, Terry McCaleb. McCaleb died while living on his boat. The widow believes it was murder. She’s a nurse and fears McCaleb’s medicine switch will be blamed on her. Harry agrees to investigate. Someone at the boat dock points out a man in a picture who stole his GPS finder. With picture in hand, Harry begins his investigation.

FBI agent Rachel Walling is called to Nevada when the well-known serial killer, The Poet, returns. The Poet is a personal case for Rachel. Their pasts are connected. The Poet’s case is reopened after the FBI receives a map and a GPS finder in the mail and begins an excavation of graves in the desert. Rachel meets up with Sherrie, the FBI agent she mentored ten years ago. The agents aren’t aware that The Poet is just a breath away. Or that his goal is to lure Rachel back into his maze of psychotic killing.

Eventually, Bosch meets up with Rachel and Sherrie. They question him about the file and pictures he’s carrying. He doesn’t trust them and they don’t trust him. But that doesn’t stop Bosch and Rachel from sharing notes and much, much more.

Connelly has the storyline moving back and forth between Bosch, Rachel, and The Poet. The author effectively reminds readers of The Poet’s intense, disturbing personality first revealed in the 1996 title, The Poet. And only the readers witness The Poet’s methodical movements and evil thoughts. When the suspense is at a perfect height, The Poet is revealed to the characters and the conclusion is a wild ride for all.

Actor Len Cariou narrates the audio version. Having heard him narrate City of Bones and now The Narrows, I can’t imagine anyone else as Harry Bosch. The suspenseful music is an ideal touch, especially during the cliff-hanger scenes.
