Taxes,
Death, & Trouble
An Audrey
Wilson Mystery
By C.M. Miller
Things are not
going well for Audrey Wilson. The newly-divorced financial consultant’s
best client, a janitor at a prestigious high school, has just been
arrested for murder. He appeals to Audrey for help, who in turn
appeals to Attorney Jules Dreyfus, who has an office down the hall
from hers. Although Jules is involved with another woman, sparks
ignite between the two when they meet.
After the prologue,
Miller moves fairly quickly into the mystery and the reader is taken
on a wild ride. I can’t recall the last time I read a book
with so much going on.
This
is a story rich with in-depth character studies. As each character
is introduced, Ms. Miller gives a brief, but detailed history that
draws the reader into that particular character’s viewpoint.
This technique ensures that the reader gets to spend time inside
each character’s head, which in turn makes the characters
come alive.
I suspected the identity of
the murder relatively early in the story. However, that did not
lessen my interest, as several of the chapters build up to a suspenseful
conclusion, making me feel as if I had to read on.
In Taxes, Death, & Trouble,
Miller has skillfully combined a nicely-thought-out mystery and
a rather surprising, but pleasing romance. This first book in the
series left me eagerly looking forward to reading the next Audrey
Wilson Mystery.
