Animal Appetite
A Dog Lover's Mystery
by Susan Conant
Dog's Life columnist Holly Winters not only trains dogs, she lives with and cherishes
two delightful Alaskan malamutes called Rowdy and Kimi. When she is invited to a bat
mitzvah, she's introduced to the details of the eighteen-year-old suicide of Jack
Andrews. Or was it murder? After accepting a dare from a friend to write about something
other than dogs, Holly sets out to discover what happened to Andrews.
I found Animal Appetite a far from an ideal read. The author, in the person of
Holly, rambles far more than is necessary or entertaining. She has a regrettable habit
of delving into unnecessarily long and detailed flashbacks that not only distract from
current events, but kept me rereading in an effort to figure out why I was being treated
to yet another flashback. After much rereading, I found most of these passages did little
to advance the mystery.
Nevertheless, I found some of the supporting characters worth the effort of getting
to know. These included the police office who lives next door, the best friend, and of
course Rowdy and Kimi. For readers who like engrossing mysteries heavy with action that
keep you turning the pages, this is not the book for you. However, if, like me, you are
enchanted with all things dog-related, you might want to try Ms. Conant's Animal Appetite
just to meet the delightful Rowdy and Kimi. |
