Billie Graham and Karen Tacete met in the dog park in New Castle, Mass. and a friendship
developed. When Karen's husband, Dan, disappeared, Karen appealed to Belle for help in
finding him. Belle's husband, Rocco, now building up his private investigation business
is involved with trying to find the thieves who stole a number of luxury cars from the
parking lot of a local elite restaurant. He really doesn't have the time to take on Dan's
disappearance, but agrees to help Belle in her investigations. Belle is a cruciverbalist
(crossword puzzle constructor) and dearly loves puzzles, either paper ones or real life
ones.
Dan is a popular dentist who has been donating his time to treat charity cases. This
is in opposition to his partner, Jack Wagner, who feels it detracts from their high society
profile. Dan's body is found burned in one of his many cars. The only identification is
his dental records. Belle uncovers many possible suspects for his murder: his partner,
his secretary, Bonnie and her brother, one of his charity cases, and Dan's wife herself.
Belle receives a number of anonymous crossword puzzles which seem to contain clues to
Dan's murder. In addition to the help from Rocco she gains support from the New Castle
group who meet every Saturday morning at the Lawson Coffee Shop. There red herrings and
clues, both forensic and from the anonymous crossword puzzles, lead to the startling conclusion.
The dialogue with the Saturday morning group is witty and sharp. The story is full of
twists and misleading clues. Is it really Dan? What part does Karen play in his disappearance?
Has he really disappeared? If so, why? The relationship between Belle and Rocco is a
happy one to observe.
As a bonus, a handful of crossword puzzles relating to the crime as well as a few others
are included (complete with answers).
A challenging good read to pass a few pleasant hours.
