Be Cool

By Elmore Leonard
Performed by Scott Campbell

Elmore Leonard delivers an entertaining sequel to “Get Shorty.” The lead character, Chili Palmer, is a likable character - cool, confident, knows how to treat the ladies. Chili has a three-picture deal with Tower studios. His first movie was a hit, the sequel wasn’t. Chili’s looking for a third movie idea. During lunch, Tommy Athens, a music mogul and gangster-of-sorts tells Chili he wants Chili’s next movie to be about him -- Tommy Athens. By the end of the killer lunch Chili’s life spins out of control, just like in the movies. While the law is trying to solve Tommy’s murder, Chili gets back to his next movie. Researching the dating services idea leads him to Linda Moon, a singer living as a back-up singer. Chili is impressed by her attitude -- at points I found it irritating, still she’s a good match for Chili. Between murder and music, Chili’s life takes on a dangerous note. And the reader’s entertainment increases -- at the expense of Hollyweird (Hollywood) and the bloated egos of the music world’s divas, and music gangsters. I’m amazed at Leonard’s talent. He can find humor in some of the oddest places and spin it into a one-of-a-kind lively storyline.

Scott Campbell narrates the audio version of “Be Cool.” His talent is tested by some pretty ecliptic characters. It’s an entertaining listen of a graphic nature, so remember those headphones.
