Cape Perdido
by Marcia Muller
If anyone who reads mysteries has never heard or read of Marcia Muller, they must pick up
a copy of one of her books. Her latest, Cape Perdido, takes place in a small lumber
town in North Carolina and exhibits her skill as a mystery writer. Cape Perdido
has a unique style to it, in that the story is taken from 4 peoples' perspectives: Jessie
Domingo, a community specialist hailing from New York City; Joseph Openshaw, an environmentalist;
Steph Pace, a restaurateur; and Timothy McNear, a former lumber mill owner. Can these
characters face the ghosts of their past? Can they keep their secrets hidden from one
another?
Marcia Muller, a multi-award winner in the mystery genre, shows her capacity of taking
several characters and putting them together in one brilliant book. Each chapter, which
is labeled, takes a different person's point of view. In many other mystery books, it
is difficult to keep track of who is who, but Ms. Muller has done a terrific job in making
sure that each poignant character is acknowledged and has his or her own say in the novel.
The small town setting is crucial to pull off a book of this caliber. |
