She becomes involved in the case of Sandra Lorgeree, presently imprisoned at Dartmore State Prison. Sandra wants Juliet to locate her infant son, Noah. Shortly after enlisting Juliet's aid, Sandra is brutally murdered. The authorities call it the result of prison violence. But Juliet is convinced that it is connected with the disappearance of Noah. She travels to northern California and through Los Angeles in search of the missing child, finding connections with the politically powerful California family, the Arguello.

This is not just a mystery about the disappearance of a baby, but also a portrayal of days in the life of a smart and sensitive woman. There are many humorous episodes. The meeting of the women's book club with its discussion of "the joys of pregnancy" and the foibles of husbands is hilarious The feeding of the four month old baby, changing diapers and her every day care while Juliet is tracking down clues brings a smile to the reader. The action is swift. The story is well told. The characters are portrayed as human and credible.
