A Crossworder's Delight
Rosco Polycrates and Belle Graham series

by Nero Blanc

In A Crossworder's Delight, a framed copy of the famous Longfellow poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," which resides at the Revere Inn, takes a "ride" of its own and is found missing. The inn calls upon Rosco Polycrates to find the valuable relic, and he meets E.T. Whitman; a twelve-year-old boy who is a language aficionado like Roscoe's wife, Belle. E.T. Whitman found the poem missing, and quickly becomes Rosco's assistant in the investigation. Although E.T.'s hypotheses about the missing poem seem to be based on the overactive imagination of a child, they turn out to be not as farfetched as they seem. At the same time, Belle Graham is in the process of helping with the annual holiday inn trimming when she finds an unsigned crossword puzzle/cookbook from the 1940's, and she will not rest until she figures out the identity of the author. As mysteriously as it disappeared, the poem returns to its original spot. However, E.T is convinced that there is something "different" about the relic, and the whodunit takes an unexpected turn of events. E.T. also helps Belle find the author of the crossword puzzle/cookbook.

Lovers of crossword puzzles and this series will find the clues to be particularly difficult in this installment, because they are based on the times and events of the 1940's. E.T. Whitman is a delightful addition to the Rosco Polycrates and Belle Graham series; and he brings a hearty dose of youth and energy that livens things up quite a bit. A Crossworder's Delight is a light, entertaining, holiday read that I recommend as a good way to get into the mood for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.
