Cut and Run

by Ridley Pearson

Federal Marshall Roland Larson fell in love with Hope Stevens, his protectee. This, of course, is against all he is permitted to do. They only have one night together as a couple before Hope is to be placed in the Witness Protection Program. She is in danger because she is the only material witness alive who is able to testify against the boss of the Mob and put him behind bars. The Mob has a contract on her life. Hope is found and nearly killed. Larson saves her life but Hope is uneasy about the Program, escapes and vanishes.

Larson is promoted for saving her life, but never found her or forgot her.

Six years later Larson is now with the Fugitive Apprehensive Service looking for a missing computer programmer who has been kidnapped. The programmer has designed the Witness Program, encrypting the names of those in the Witness Protection Program (and their families). With this the Mob will be able to locate anyone dangerous to them who is hidden in the Program. The Mob plans to offer the list to other crime families.

Larson thinks he has heard Hope (for whom he has searched and hasn't forgotten) laugh in a theatre. Their paths finally cross again, and Larson is surprised to learn that she has a six year old daughter, Penny, the result of their one night together. The Mob locates Hope and sets out to finish what they had started six years ago. Hope is located by the Mob, and Penny turns up missing.

Larson and Hope team up to locate the missing programmer whose son has been held hostage until he reveals the secret of the Program list. They find their efforts place not only the two children in danger but also themselves. The suspense is constant with Larson and Hope in a battle to win the freedom and lives of two innocent children in addition to protecting the identities of those in the Witness Protection Program. The devotion of Larson and his unending search for Hope is constant. The relationship between the two is developed with sensitivity and understanding. The characters are believable with very human emotions and conflicts.

In addition to a thrilling story which keeps the reader on the edge of their emotions we learn a lot about the workings of the Witness Protection Program.

Don't start this book unless you have all day. This is one of the best suspense thrillers of the year.....
