Death Is a Bargain
A Kate Kennedy Senior Sleuth mystery
by Nora Charles
Widow Kate Kennedy and her sister-in-law and long time best friend Marlene Friedman plan
to attend the Palmetto Beach, Florida Flea Market. Marlene, a pack rat, hopes to sell
some of her 1960's memorabilia. They are fortunate to get a table in the center aisle
outside the Cunningham Circus tent. The table became available when its renter, Whitey,
who sold Dewars, died. He was electrocuted in his bath watching TV. From conversations
with the other table occupants Kate feels that Whitey's death was not an accident. She
has numerous suspects: Sean Cunningham, owner of the circus and a performing clown; his
brother, Jacko also a clown; Danielle, the lovely animal trainer who Kate suspects of
abusing the elephants; Linda, the "doll lady" with her pet cat Precious and her 5 year
old son, Billy; Suzanne and her daughter, Olivia who sell costume jewelry. While she is
pursuing clues, two more aisle members are killed: Carl Krieg who sold Nazi and World War
II memorabilia and comic book trader and photographer Frederick Duckworth. There are
confusing connections among the suspects and it is only by sheer luck that Kate escapes
death from the murderer.
The atmosphere of Florida and its senior citizen population is successfully evoked.
The character of Kate's friend, Mary Frances Costello, ex-nun and current Broward County
tango champion, adds a humorous note to the story. The relationship between Linda's 5
year old son, Billy, and Kate, Marlene, and Mary Frances is heart warming, especially
when Mary Frances teaches Billy the tango. There are several minor plots (animal abuse,
blackmail) which are not fully developed.
This is a book which will not challenge the reader, but will help kill a few hours. |
