Death Goes Dutch
by Albert A Bell Jr.
Saah DeGraaf is a Korean American adopted with no knowledge of who her American soldier
father and Korean mother are. In Grand Rapids, Michigan she works for an agency that
reunites adoptees with their biological parents. Her current case is that of Josh Adams.
She has traced his mother to be Margaret Dystra, daughter of powerful furniture manufacturing
family. Margaret was forced to place her illegitimate son up for adoption by her domineering
father. She had never forgiven him for this and kept the memory of her son alive by
creating a trust fund for him if he is ever found. Margaret dies under suspicious
circumstances leading to the thought that someone wants to protect the trust fund
from leaving the family.
Sarah breaks the news to Josh that his mother is dead, but reunites him with his
grandmother, Ella. His uncle, Edmund and his wife Katherine are reluctant to accept
him as Margaret's son. There are suspicious events in Josh's life which cast doubt on
his being Margaret's son. It is Sarah's job to investigate these events and the family's
secrets to save not only her job but also Josh's claim.
This is a well crafted murder mystery with a cast of intriguing characters. The meeting
between Josh and his grandmother is touching and full of emotion. Sarah's investigations
into the background of the Dykstra family and its connection to Josh is told in detail.
The reader is presented with an excellent portrayal of the problems of adoptees and their
desire to learn their true background. |
