The Fix

by Anthony Lee

Martin Quinn is a tough fatherless Irish boy raised by an Italian gangster. Felix Pasko is the son of a Russian Mafioso. They become firm friends. Unfortunately, the friendship is blemished when Felix marries Penny, Martin's childhood sweetheart.

Martin is ambitious. He wants the respect of the mob and the fortune to be made in his heroin trade. Felix is murdered by a revengeful and greedy mobster, Terry, who is in turn also killed. Martin is caught in the deaths and is accused of them. He is innocent, but must clear himself by turning state's evidence against Felix's father. He must agree to turn state's evidence and protect himself or have the Russian mob eliminate him in revenge for Felix's death.

This gripping thriller is set in New York. The author has successfully evoked the sights and sounds of the city during this time. The relationship between Martin and Felix is an intense one which breeds jealousy and greed. The moral dilemma facing Martin is a profound one which is treated in depth as are the psychological aspects of Martin's problems and feelings for Penny. This is a gritty story of grim and dark areas of the lives of two men. Martin's reflections on his past and its possible effect on his life are described in depth.

A highly recommended, thought provoking read.
