The Ghost And the Dead Deb
Haunted Book Shop series, No. 2
by Alice Kimberly
Penelope McClure and her aunt own and operate Buy the Book bookstore. They invite True
Crime author Angel Stark to discuss her book. The result is a true crime tale of their
own. Angel Stark names names and points fingers in her book. Publishing it has created
some deadly enemies. When a scene erupts during the author's reading, Penelope discovers
just how deadly -- and close -- Stark's enemies really are. Stark takes it all in stride
and disappears into the night. Later a body is found and a local accused of murder. Penelope
thinks the local police are wrong, so she and resident ghost, P.I. Jack Shepard, hold a
court-of-sorts to prove it.
Kimberly pens an intriguing mystery. She lays down some subtle clues, gives some impressive
twists then effectively pulls it all together. Penelope is a strong lead character. And Jack
is an absolute delight. In this book his life... or is that death... takes on a new twist.
And it only cost a nickel. Kimberly's choice on how the living interact with the dead
is entertaining -- especially in how Penelope becomes Jack's partner in his era. I hope
one day Kimberly puts the living Jack in a series of his own. I believe she would be
successful at it. She certainly has the 1940s era down pat. In fact, it's the prologue
(a 1940s flashback) that hooked me. Here's just a bit of it...
"Excuse me, but are you Jack Shepard?"
The perfume reached him before the words. Not cheap and obvious, like his gum-chewing
secretary's, but subtle, delicate, and dripping with pedigree.
"Look at 'em," said Jack, still staring out the window. "Most of 'em hungry and tired
and crazy to get out of the summer heat. All of them, from this height, small enough to
swat like flies."
"One of them did get swatted," said the dame. "That's why I'm here."
The Ghost and the Dead Deb is an enjoyable, quick read. I highly recommend it. |
