Give
First Place to Murder
By
Kathleen Delaney
While
attending an Arabian Horse show, Ellen Mckenzie discovers the body
of a groom, Rusty. His body is impaled on a hay bale by a pitchfork.
Rusty is employed by Irma, with whom Ellen's daughter, Susannah,
has taken a summer job. Ellen immediately calls her lover, Dan Dunham,
the chief of police. She is concerned that Susannah might be in
danger. She begins to question those connected with the horse show.
She is suspicious of Chovalo Irma's indispensable worker, Wes Fowler,
and his wife, Linda, who operate the horse transport for Irma. When
Bryce Ellis, Irma's trainer, is found murdered in the bathroom,
Ellen knows that they must find the murderer before he strikes again.
A
mystery with a dose of romance and an atmosphere of tension and
suspense, this is an enjoyable story. The author has evoked a realistic
sense of the horse judging competition. The characters are likable;
the relationship between mother (Ellen) and daughter (Susannah),
and the young couple ( Susannah and Neil) is delightful. It is pleasant
to observe the ongoing romance between Ellen and Dan.
A
quick read this will entertain especially horse lovers.
