Island Intrigue

by Wendy Howell Mills

Sabrina Dunsweeney's life had taken a decided turn for the worse. First, she lost her mother, a domineering woman who'd planned Sabrina's life so she could always be close, died. Sabrina, a teacher who had never married, found herself alone. Next, she had a cancer scare, though the small lump wasn't malignant and she recovered quickly. But she didn't feel like returning to her teaching job. She really didn't know who she was. All she knew was what her mother had wanted her to be.

Sabrina found tiny Comico Island and decided it was time she took a long vacation. She bought some new clothes in bright colors like she'd never worn, rented a red convertible and went there.

Sabrina made friends with the locals quickly, beginning with an old curmudgeon named Lima Lowry, who drew her into local politics and told her about a couple of Comico family feuds. One involved Lima's in-laws, the Tittletotts. They'd been feuding with the Wrightlys for centuries, ever since Lord Tittletott arrested Walk-the-Plank Wrightly for piracy. According to Lima, Wrightly's ghost had returned to the island recently. Someone, probably Wrightly, was playing havoc with his nephew's campaign for President of the Sanitary Concessionary, the most important post on the island.

Then, someone added murder to the mix. Because she was an outsider and a tourist, Sabrina found that some of the locals were casting suspicious eyes toward her. Since she needed something to do besides destroy cookware in an effort to be independent, she decided to investigate. After all, there were too many things on Comico Island that didn't make sense.

This little mystery was well written. Wendy Mills got your attention on the first page and kept it until the end. Just when you thought you knew who did it, something happened to change your mind. Mystery lovers, pick up Island Intrigue and enjoy a good read.
