Killer
Swell
by Jeff Shelby
Shelby's
formal entrance into the world of published books is phenomenal. Noah
Braddock, a San Diego surfer turned private eye, and his buddy, Carter
Hamm, make a compelling pair of heroes for the first book of Shelby's
planned series. They are witty, funny, tough, and sometimes vulnerable.
The other characters, good guys and bad guys alike are richly drawn,
and easily visualized.
Marilyn Crier wants Noah's help
to find her missing daughter, Kate...who just happened to be the
love of Noah's life a decade ago. Noah and the Criers didn't get
along all those years ago, and are skeptical about each other now,
but Noah seems best suited to search for Kate.
The
action is fast-paced as Noah matches wits with his sometimes-girlfriend,
Detective Liz Santangelo, Kate's husband, and the Mexican hoodlums
that populate this richly plotted, gripping story. Danger, deception,
murder and rumors of dope deals gone badly are served up in the
vivid, exciting world of Southern California surfing, with an ending
that I really didn't see coming.
I
tried to think of another writer to compare Jeff's style with; think
Elmore Leonard combined with Michael Connelly? ....but, no, his
crisp writing style is strictly Jeff Shelby. I'm eager to read more
books by Jeff, and especially about this memorable new character,
Noah Braddock...he may be addictive. Dare I hope for Carter and
Liz in the next book?
