Daisy Hubbard is a neurogeneticist driven in her work by her own demons. In her genetic
research, Daisy hopes to find a cure for many diseases; however, her main concern is the
study of Stein-Zellars disease, which took the life of her baby brother and whose death
affected her whole family.
Daisy works night and day with no private life of her own until her mother calls to
tell her that her sister Anna has disappeared once again. Anna suffers from acute schizophrenia
and frequently vanishes for periods of time.
This time may be different. Los Angles Police Department detective Jack Makowski is
investigating Anna's missing persons case .In the course of investigating Anna's disappearance,
a serial killer is apprehended and insists that he will show where Anna is buried, but
only to Daisy. Detective Makowski has asked Daisy to come to Campo Beach and help.
As Daisy dances on the end of the killer's puppet strings, the killer plays his evil
games. Daisy remembers a lot about the childhood that she and Anna shared. Their life
was not always easy and the death of their baby brother was not the only event that formed
Anna's problems. To thwart the killer's game, she attempts to trace her sister's movements
for the past ten months and slowly finds herself attracted to the handsome detective.
Alice Blanchard is a talented writer who obviously researches her characters and subjects
and makes them real to the reader. Her previous book Breathtaker was one of my
top ten favorites of the past year and I must admit that Life Sentences may make
this year's list.
