Jessica Fletcher returns in the twenty-fourth volume of the ever-popular Murder, She
Wrote series based on the Universal television series created by Peter S. Fischer,
Richard Blevinson, and William Link, and coauthored by long-time mystery writer Donald
Bain.
In Margaritas & Murder, Jessica tells the tale of her vacation in San Miguel
de Allende, Mexico. She had gone to visit Vaughn and Olga Buckley, her publisher and his
wife, at the home that they had bought in SMA. What began as a two-week vacation ends,
as usual, with murder.
Vaughn's friend Woody Manheim moved to Mexico to make his military pension stretch.
Though loud and obnoxious in a cheerful sort of way, he was still a part of the American
expatriate community. Since the Mexican mail is too slow and undependable, many of the
"expats," as they call themselves, keep post office boxes in Laredo, Texas. Every so often,
Manheim drives to Laredo and picks up everyone's mail. This time, he asks Vaughn to join
him on what he calls the "mail run."
Olga doesn't want him to make the trip and Manheim has postponed it twice so that Vaughn
could go. This time, determined to have his adventure, Vaughn has overridden Olga's
objections. After Jessica is robbed on the way to the Buckley home, Olga's misgivings
turn into solid objections and become fears when Vaughn and Woody do not return home on
time.
Just as in the TV show, this episode of Murder, She Wrote is
full of plot twists and turns. The end, though somewhat predictable,
still holds a surprise when the mastermind of the kidnapping is
revealed. For fans of Murder, She Wrote it's a delightful
return to favorite characters and a good murder yarn. Pick up a
copy and enjoy!
