A Midsummer Night's Scream
Jane Jeffrey Mystery, No. 15
by Jill Churchill
Jane Jeffry and her neighbor Shelly Nowack are occupying their time with needlepoint
classes and theater in Jill Churchill's latest mystery, A Midsummer Night's Scream.
The ladies aren't treading the boards, but evaluating caterers for the new theater -or,
at least Shelly is, so she can make a presentable showing by having her husband's business
dinners catered by the best. Jane comes along as a competent taster. As usual, they find
themselves neck deep in murder-two this time-and offer valuable assistance to the homicide
detective in charge, who happens to be Jane's paramour, Mel.
Fans of this series will welcome the great details Churchill offers about not only
the catering, but all of the gustatory side adventures: dinners out and lunches with
movie stars. Plus, readers get a good general lesson in needlepoint. It was enough to
tempt me to dig out an old unfinished canvas myself.
Though I found the plot uncomplicated and the ending expected, I can understand the
appeal of this series. Each adventure is like a visit with old friends you have come to
know and love. I, too, will wonder what other skills Jane and Shelly will acquire and
what mischief they will get themselves into next. And, I will be interested in how Jane's
kids get along in school and whether she and Mel will heat up their relationship. |
