Murder Uncorked
The First Wine Lover's Mystery
by Michele Scott
Nikki Sands might look like a waitress, but she is really a "resting" actress with a failed
TV series behind her whose best years are also ...behind her. Perhaps her main asset is
that she knows wines, so when an unfortunate event at her place of work results in her
being offered a job with a six-figure salary, she accepts. Her new employer is the main
wine producer in Napa Valley, handsome Derek Malveaux, who seems too good to be true,
especially when the first thing she finds when she gets there is a dead body. The dead
man is Derek's best winemaker, and with a houseful of the boss' relations at her
(and each other's) throats, Nikki is going to have to do more than just act the part of
a detective as she did in her failed TV series...
If you like drinking wine but know nothing about it (like this reviewer), this is an
enjoyable way to start educating yourself. This engaging cozy even features some tasty
recipes plus wines that complement them inter-leafed between the murders and intrigue
to start you off. Having the tale narrated in the third person is a good idea with this
type of book, I always think, as it brings the reader closer to the puzzle whodunit and
distances them a little from the main character. Nikki is a reasonably sympathetic protagonist
who doesn't have everything going for her (unlike some cozy heroines). She takes risks,
but not too many, enjoying the role of sleuth, but making time to enjoy other things as
well. It is a fairly teasing plot, with some local color to enjoy, and a cast of ghastly
family members to shudder at. I'd read the others in the series when they come out. |
