Pain Killer

by Will Staegar

A badly burned and broken tattooed male body washed up on one of the beaches of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Captain Roy of the Island Police wants Cooper to dispose of the body without disturbing the tourists. Cooper is the local CIA agent in the Virgin Islands. He has no immediate duties; has no supervision; doesn't report to anyone in authority; and has an unlimited budget. In the past he had incriminating evidence of sexual misconduct about the head of his department. In exchange for his silence he has this ideal situation. Intrigued by the dead man's condition, Cooper takes the body to a shady ex-patriot coroner who reluctantly agrees to conduct an autopsy. The results are so dangerous that Cooper decides to investigate the origin of the corpse. He unearths evidence of a huge buildup of weapons by the Chinese with a secret site of nuclear experiments.

At the same time Julie Laramie, a low level agent working for the CIA stumbles across the same Chinese plot. When she reveals her discoveries to her superiors she is threatened, that if there are any leaks about this, she will be fired.

Cooper and Laramie link up, trusting each other in hopes to save the world from a holocaust.

This is a terrific thriller. It is packed with wild action which keeps the reader turning the pages to catch the next action. The characters are realistic and are people you would like to know; especially Cooper who you would always want to have as a support. The partnership between Cooper and Laramie is a rewarding one. The nuclear experiments and the arms buildup are researched in detail.

Highly recommended as a book not to be missed.
