Shades of Black

By various authors edited by Eleanor Taylor Bland

Shades of Black is a wonderful collection of crime and mystery stories. Authors include the well known Walter Mosley as well as twenty-one other African-American authors. Some you might know and some you might not. All in all an interesting read that will keep you turning the pages from one story to the next.

While each of these stories is written differently you'll find that crime and intrigue is the common thread. There is a particularly timely story called "God of the Pond" by a little known author named Charles Shipps. He currently has a mystery novel waiting to be published and I hope to be able to read it one day. Mr. Shipps was able to master the use of a few pages to create a gripping tale of Internet crime and the detective who is tracking him. This story alone would have made a wonderful novel. Many of the authors in this book show such wonderful talent.

There is something for everyone in this collection from a children's detective to real detectives to seemingly normal people who get caught up in an event beyond their control. Interesting characters and situations to make you want to look up some of these authors to see what else they've written. It would be well worth the time to do so.
