'Twas the Bite Before Christmas
Jack Field Dog Trainer Mysteries, No. 4
by Lee Charles Kelley
This is my first encounter with Jack Field, dog trainer and homicide consultant for the
Maine Medical Examiner's office. Quite frankly, I was totally charmed off my feet!!!
In the latest mystery, 'Twas the Bite Before Christmas, by Lee Charles Kelley,
Field must unravel a tightly knitted locked mansion puzzle, complete with a fake paranormal
researcher and the Russian mafia. He is also battling his annual Christmas cold, difficulties
with his stepson, Leon, problems with his fiancée and his ex, and a vengeful local chief
of police who appears everywhere with his ticket book in hand. The plot kept me guessing.
Once I was even up in arms in protest at a turn at the end. But everything resolved very
much to my liking.
What I like most about Jack Field is his wit. His repartee with the local police during
the investigation, and some of his responses to his fiancée, who is the state medical
examiner, is reminiscent of old Dick Powell movies of the 1940s. His timing is great and
his satire is subtle and classy. But Jack Field is very much a modern man.
I found that the book did get a little slow when Field waxed eloquent on the history
and philosophy of dog training. I learned a lot and wouldn't let that keep me from reaching
quickly for the next Jack Field installment. You will love this series. |
