All the Flowers are Dying is Lawrence Block's 16th book in the series featuring Matt Scudder. In the series Matt
has evolved from a New York City Police Detective and bad drunk to a recovering alcoholic, and later to a retired private
eye who seems content to live his life and enjoy his marriage to Elaine, the love of his life.
Not often does a character have such a long ride. It is hard to realize that Matt is now in his mid-sixties and
still playing the hero.
As All the Flowers are Dying opens, a man is approaching the execution chamber in a Virginia prison. Over
his entire incarceration he has claimed his innocence for the horrific murders for which he is about to executed. One
man believes his innocence and knows that he is, in fact, the fourth victim in this series of crimes.
A second storyline runs through, as one of Elaine's friends think she has meet Mr. Right on the Internet. She wisely
asks Matt to run a check on the gentleman, and Matt soon discovers the man has some secrets he would rather keep hidden.
As the storyline progresses and the body count adds up, the reader is once more taken on a ride with Matt, Elaine
and many of the characters they have come to know from reading his former books.
It is reassuring and relaxing to pick up a book that carries characters that I have been reading for twenty years
or more. Lawrence Block never fails to satisfy.
