Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea
Aunt Dimity Mystery, # 11

by Nancy Atherton

Lori Shepard, a U.S. expatriate, lives in the Cotswolds, England with her lawyer husband, Bill Willis and their five year old twins, William and Rob. Bill begins recieving emails from an anonymous stalker who signs himself Abaddon. Abaddon threatens Bill's life and those of Lori and their children. On the advice of Scotland Yard Chief Superintendent Wesley Yarborough Lori and the twins are to be moved to an undisclosed location while Yarborough and Bill go through Bill's client files in search of the stalker.

Their secret haven is at Dundrillin Castle on the secluded Scottish island of Erinskil, owned by Sir Percy Pelham, millionaire friend of Bill's father. There they live in the lap of luxury protected by their body guards, Andrew and Damian. Their idyllic time here is disrupted when the twins find an ancient skull on the beach. The inhabitants of the island tell stories of the slaughter of an ancient group of monks living at their monastery there by invading Vikings. Their spirits are supposed to haunt the island.

Lori's Cotwolds neighbor, Peter Harris, arrives on the island with his girl friend, Cassie, in disguise fleeing reporters from the tabloids. He points out the affluence of the inhabitants of the island which can't be explained by their tweed manufacturing industry. They suspect involvement in drug smuggling and set out to unearth the mystery. Their search leads them into danger and a deadly encounter with the sinister Abaddon.

The Aunt Dimity series presents a welcome change of pace from spine tingling thrillers. There is humor, love and adventure with excellent characterizations of the Laird (Sir Percy) and the two bodyguards, as well as the fearless and curious Lori. Of course, there is the blue journal and Aunt Dimity with her sage advice from Beyond. We are given a tour of the island, the castle and its surrounding land plus a glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of this remote island.

This is an easy, quick, fun read which will fill a few pleasant hours. Also included is a recipe for sticky lemon cake (Sir Percy's favorite) which I was tempted to try..... It's delicious as well as being simple to make.
