Belle Ruin
An Emma Graham mystery, No. 3
by Martha Grimes
Emma Graham is a precocious 12 year old, who converses with the sheriff, acts as waitress in the family hotel, is
writing an account for the local newspaper of her escape from murder (Cold Flat Junction and Hotel
Paradise) and fights with 18 year old ReeJane.
She is determined to discover the identity of a mysterious girl only she can see, and must solve the mystery
surrounding a baby kidnapped from the once famous Belle Rouen 40 years ago.
The story is narrated by the irrepressible Emma, whose endearing ways and sparkling observations make a charming
and intriguing story. Emma's relationships with the elderly occupants of the hotel and the inhabitants of the town
are complicated as well as amusing. The story is well written with catchy dialogue. There are references to events
in two previous books (Cold Flat Junction and Hotel Paradise) which may confuse the new reader, but
the story is nonetheless well worth reading. |
