Blessed Is The Busybody
Ministry Is Murder Series
by Emilie Richards
Aggie (short for Agate) Sloan-Wilcox is a minister's wife with a difference, raised to be
a free spirit by her hippy mother. As such, she is likely to have trouble fitting in
wholesome, picket-fenced Emerald Springs, but she does not anticipate murder; especially
as the female dead body is laid across her front porch, and is stark naked. Worse still,
her husband seems to know the victim and won't say in what capacity. It is time for Aggie
to turn sleuth and get to the bottom of it all before it gets worse, and her husband loses
his job.
So far this sounds simple enough, but there is far more packed into these pages than
just this. It is one of those books that get more and more tortuous and fascinating the
further in you go, and is certainly one of the best cozies I have read for some time.
Told in Aggie's own words, this gives a lively look at the secrets behind the twitching
curtains of a small town, and lifts the lid on all sorts of sins. There is more in here
than that, as Aggie raises her children, copes with the minutiae of daily life and who
can resist any book with the winning first line "Teddy was getting ready to bury the
cat again"? This also looks as though it might be one of those series that will be read
for more than just its whodunit and coziness, as we get tantalising glimpses of Aggie's
unconventional family and book two Let There Be Suspects looks even more interesting.
Emilie Richards is definitely one to watch - 2005's best cozy debut. |
