Bon Bon Voyage
A Culinary Mystery, No. 8
by Nancy Fairbanks
The son and daughter of El Paso food writer Carolyn Blue arrange a free passage on the gourmet
cruise ship The Bountiful Feast as a Mother's Day gift. She has free passage for
herself and her husband in exchange for the publicity her columns will give the cruise line.
The ship will travel from Lisbon to Barcelona, with a stop at the Canary Islands. Carolyn's
husband Jason can't take the trip, since he must give a lecture at a scientific conference.
In his place, Carolyn invites her friend, retired cop Luz Vallejo. Not knowing this, Jason
has his mother, Vera, take his place, thus Carolyn has to share her cabin with Luz, who has
a foul mouth, and her mother-in-law Vera, who has a feminist agenda. The food is delectable,
but the atmosphere becomes unsettled. One of the passengers is missing, and Carolyn is disturbed
that no one seems concerned, then a few members of the crew drug the passengers and take over
the ship. It is up to Carolyn, with the help of Owen Griffith, a passenger and a writer of
adventure novels, to take back the ship and rescue the passengers and the captured crew.
Meanwhile, Jason tries to reach the ship, which appears to be missing.
This is a fast-moving story with a cast of entertaining and crazy characters who become
involved in unbelievable and sometimes ridiculous situations. Jason's trials in trying to reach
the ship will tickle your funny bone and perhaps remind you of some of your own frustrations
with bureaucracy. The descriptions of the various menus and foods on board ship are mouth
watering. Fortunately, a number of recipes are included. The strawberry-pecan pie is delicious
