Bone Valley
Lilly Cleary series #3
by Claire Matturro
Scatterbrained Lilly Cleary, a Sarasota, Florida defense attorney with an obsessive compulsive disorder and an eye
for the guys, has a new client who is another oddball character. Angus John Cartright is the defendant who is
being sued for fruit libel by an orange grower. Angus John claims that toxic waste has polluted the orange grove,
making the fruit dangerous to eat. Then, when M. David Moody, who was actually a former boyfriend of Lilly’s, turns
up dead and floating in a phosphogypsum stack in Manatee County, it looks like there are more serious problems than
insulting an orange. Lilly and Angus, along with Angus' sexy buddy, Miguel, take a tour of the toxic waste
facilities; and then Angus is the victim of an explosion that destroys Miguel's boat, narrowly missing Lilly and
Miguel.
Florida's Bone Valley region provides the toxic background, while Lilly's fearless vibrancy and her
madcap escapades with an eye to solving the murders add farcical comedy to a tale about the catastrophic effects
abandoned phosphate mines and deadly gyp stacks can have on people and the environment.
Lilly is always eager to bill more hours, and her case load is pitiful, but this case goes from zany to deadly
when it begins to look like she may be the next target. The exciting multi-level plot, the unforgettable cast of
characters and nonstop action makes this book a thoroughly enjoyable read. It would appeal to chick-lit
aficionados as well as anyone who enjoys a few good laughs and an electrifying legal thriller. |
