Bye Bye Black Sheep
A Mommy Track mystery, No. 7
by Ayelet Waldman
Juliet Applebaum is a private investigator, mother of three and a former public defender. Heavenly, an African-American
transvestite, shows up in tears in Juliet’s office asking her to track down the murderer of Heavenly's sister, Violetta,
a drug addict and prostitute. Violetta's death has been ignored by the Los Angeles Police Department. Even though
the agency doesn't lack for clients, Juliet and her partner, ex-cop Al Hockey, are touched by Heavenly's case and
agree to investigate. Their search for the killer takes them to some of the least attractive sections of town.
They conduct interviews with many dubious characters, with Violetta's relatives, and with street walker colleagues.
With a possible solution to the case, Juliet approaches the detectives who were handling the case and finds them
still disinterested. It is up to Juliet and Al to resolve the problem.
This is a fast-moving, easy read. It is full of humor as well as pathos. The plight of the downtrodden and the
disenfranchised people is treated with compassion and a spirit of helpfulness. Juliet is a very resourceful woman
who seems to be able to juggle the care and feeding of her three children and her put-upon husband with her P I
investigations. Her relationship with Al Hockey is a close one filled with cooperation and understanding.
Ideal for a few hours of pleasant non-stressful reading... |
