Jane Tesh writes her first novel about Private Investigator Madeline Maclin, known to her
friends as "Mac." Mac lives in Parkland, North Carolina. She has opened her own private
investigative services agency in Parkland, but no one seems to be taking the former beauty
queen seriously. Her former boss, Reid Kent, was especially disparaging in his remarks.
He kept rubbing in the fact that she had nothing to do.
When her best friend, Jerry Fairweather, asks her to go with him to claim a house in
Celosia, a thirty-minute drive, she jumps at the chance. The house had been left to
Jerry by his uncle, Val Eberlin. Jerry, who thinks of himself as a psychic, has refused
to accept his share of the Fairweather family fortune. He makes his living doing psychic
readings. When they arrive in Celosia, they find the local beauty pageant was slated for
the following Saturday, but it is being sabotaged. Mac is hired to find out who is behind
the malicious mischief.
The house turns out to be perfect for séances. Jerry is ready to fix up the house and
set up shop. His girlfriend, a lawyer named Olivia, is none too thrilled with the idea.
She doesn't like having Mac around, either. The feeling is mutual for Mac. She suddenly
realizes that she has fallen in love with Jerry. Within hours of her arrival in Celosia,
Mac is hired for two cases.
Then Mac's investigation into the beauty pageant turns into a murder investigation.
Someone has also broken into the TV station and the insurance agent's office. Mac is
called, but the police chief doen't want her in danger. Can Mac find the killer and
solve the mystery of the ghostly apparitions before anyone else dies?
A Case of Imagination almost qualifies as a cozy mystery. It is a perfect
picture of small-town life. Pick up a copy and enjoy a fun read.
