Come Closer

by Sara Gran

As Sara Gran's novel Come Closer opens, the reader is introduced to a lovely young architect named Amanda and her handsome husband Ed, a finance officer. They have recently married and are happy with their life. Amanda is designing their home and all is well with the life they have chosen.

Soon Amanda hears tapping noises in the house that go on and on, and she is starting to have vivid and erotic dreams about a woman named Naamah. In the dreams the woman emerges from a blood red ocean onto a beach. She is entirely nude when she takes Amanda into her arms. She promises to never leave.

Amanda accidentally receives a book in the mail about demon possession and as a lark takes a quiz. Seems she answers yes to a few too many questions and suspects she may be possessed.

As the story develops, Ed sees some bad changes in his wife. For one thing, she’s begun to smoke again after quitting because of his allergies. She is not keeping house as she once did, and since Ed is a neat freak this is a bad sign for sure. He suggests a psychiatrist. But it seems Amanda may be more in line for an exorcism

Before the story is over, Amanda has begun shoplifting, meeting strange men in bars, and yes, even become involved with a murder or two.

This book was eerie in the way the build-up came on. Amanda's day-to-day life grew steadily more creepy. Was Amanda possessed or simply slowly going insane? A page turner for sure.
