Dead Man Docking
A Bed and Breakfast mystery, No. 21
by Mary Daheim
Bed and breakfast owner Judith Flynn and her cousin wacky Renie, go to San Francisco to join the 1930’s themed maiden
cruise of Renie's employer's luxury liner, the San Rafael. At the bon voyage party, the body of the cruise
ship owner, Magglio Cruz, is found stabbed to death and stuffed into the piano. The bon voyage party, of course, is
cancelled, leaving Judith and Renie free to explore San Francisco with a wealthy couple, Rick and Rhonda St George.
They proceed to paint the town red, all the while attempting to narrow the list of suspects and find the killer.
This is a lighthearted, madcap adventure. The characters are stereotyped. Rich and Rhonda with their dog, Asthma,
are reminiscent of Nick and Nora Charles of long ago fiction. (Remember them?) Their adventures with Judith and Renie
are almost slapstick. The dialogue seems contrived and artificial. To me this is a very disappointing addition to the
Bed and Breakfast series. |
